College scholarships available

The Joseph C. McCloskey Charitable Fund will be providing four college scholarships for students who live in Tacony.

Two women will receive money from the Elizabeth McCloskey Memorial Scholarship, while two men will receive money from the John C. Sullivan Jr. Scholarship.

The deadline to apply is April 15.

Crescentville church has food sale

Crescentville United Methodist Church Women’s Fellowship is selling pot pies and assorted dishes.

Items available are chicken pot pie ($4.50), beef pot pie ($4.75), shrimp pot pie ($5), chicken/broccoli ($4.50), chicken parmigiana ($5), roast turkey platter ($5). macaroni au gratin ($3.00) and apple deep dish ($2.50).

The deadline to order is March 1.

All orders must be picked up on Saturday, March 7, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the church, 412 E. Sentner St.

WHYY to host Sober St. Pat’s Day

Tickets are on sale for WHYY’s Sober St. Patrick’s Day, a family-friendly party celebrating Irish entertainment in an alcohol-free setting. The show will immediately follow the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday, March 15, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the WHYY Public Media Commons, 150 N. Sixth St.

Admission costs $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and students or $10 for kids 10 and younger.

Muller earns award from Pittsburg brewery

Pittsburgh-based Penn Brewery announced Muller Inc. as co-Wholesaler of the Year.

Muller Inc., at 2800 Grant Ave., shared the award with Goettler Distributing.

“We awarded these titles to our wholesale distributors who showed the greatest year-on-year percentage increase in Penn dollar sales,” said George Marsico, Penn Brewery’s vice president of sales.

Muller Inc. was recognized for building brand awareness and distribution of the brand in southeastern Pennsylvania.

Goettler holds the license to distribute Penn beers in all of Butler County.

It achieved an 18-percent year-on-year dollar sales increase in Penn beers in 2014.

Penn Brewery, Pittsburgh’s brewery, specializes in handmade craft beers. It sells in six states in the mid-Atlantic. ••

WEL and Holy Family announce collaboration

Wesley Enhanced Living and Holy Family University have announced a collaboration that will bring continuing professional education to nurses and social workers who work with aging individuals and their families.

Recognizing a need for specific continuing professional education that enhances skills and knowledge in geriatric care and services, the two entities have developed a series of seminars approved by the National Association of Social Workers-Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association.

Holy Family University educators will present the seminars at Wesley Enhanced Living Pennypack Park, 8401 Roosevelt Blvd., and Wesley Enhanced Living Burholme, 7040 Oxford Ave., throughout the spring and fall.

“Holy Family University is invested in the success of our community and particularly in providing quality training for those who work tirelessly for our most vulnerable citizens. These kinds of partnerships in education give us a wonderful opportunity to invest in the lifelong learning of those who care for our loved ones, supporting Holy Family University’s core value: family,” said Dr. Linda Thompson, director of counseling psychology programs at Holy Family.

Prohibition lecture to be held at Holy Family

Sarah Winski, developer of the National Constitution Center’s 2012 exhibition “American Spirits: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition,” will tell the fascinating story of the nation’s Prohibition Era, America’s most colorful and complex Constitutional hiccup, during a free lecture sponsored by Glen Foerd on the Delaware and Holy Family University.

The lecture will take place on Friday, March 6, at 7 p.m. at Holy Family’s Education Technology Center Auditorium, 9801 Frankford Ave.

Winski will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the triumphs and tribulations of mounting the exhibition, which is on a 10-city national tour.

Vietnam era reservists plan reunion

A group of Vietnam era U.S. Army Reservists from Philadelphia seeks to contact fellow veterans to plan a reunion in the Northeast.

The group of about nine veterans has been meeting monthly at various restaurants and bars for the last decade. They now want to open up the group for a large-scale reunion. The invitation is directed to veterns who served between 1959 and 1965 in Company B of the 813th Tank Battalion, 79th Infantry Division; Company B of the 68th Armored Regiment; and HQ Company of the 77th Armored Regiment, 157th Infantry Brigade.

Adult softball league looking for players

The Not Quite Over the Hill Softball League is recruiting players age 49–65 for its 25th anniversary season. Games are played Mondays through Thursdays.

Post looking for new members

Rhawnhurst-Castor Post 754 is open to any American veteran who would like to join the American Legion. Membership is open to anyone who served in the military.

Post 754 is the largest in Philadelphia with 650 members, including men and women. During the Christmas season, the post participates in Operation Food Drive for the families of deployed military personnel.

The post also has visitation programs for the veterans’ home on Southampton Road and at area schools, as well as a poppy program and an active honor guard. The post meets at the Corp. John Loudenslager Post, 7976 Oxford Ave.

Dues cost $25 for 2015.

City’s pro cycling race renamed

Mayor Michael Nutter on Feb. 11 announced that the city’s annual professional cycling race has been renamed the Philadelphia International Cycling Classic and will be produced by G4 Productions.

The Cycling Classic, which will be on Sunday, June 7, will feature an amateur course ride and men’s and women’s professional races.
