The Friends of Pennypack Park is already gearing up for Earth Day 2015 and seeks the public’s help in choosing this year’s commemorative button that volunteers will wear during the annual Earth Day park cleanup.
Each year, FOPP member Roland Williams designs a new button featuring a rendering of a different species of bird. This year, Williams has designed two buttons, one with a white-throated sparrow and the other with a grackle. Visitors to the Friends of Pennypack Park’s Facebook page will be asked to vote for a “Bird for the Button.”
According to FOPP volunteer Nance Kerns, the birds will not campaign, accept donations from Super PACs or put up signs in the park. Voting will continue until St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. The new button will be unveiled and distributed to volunteers on April 25 during the Earth Day cleanup at Little City (also known as the park’s Rhawn Street entrance across from Holmehurst Avenue).
The Facebook page also features images of previous button designs. The FOPP is looking to complete its collection of historical Earth Day buttons. Anyone who wishes to donate an old button may call 215–934-PARK or email FOPPMonthlyCU@aol.com.
Those who do not volunteer but wish to purchase buttons may do so by contacting the same phone number or email. The cost is $2 per button ($1.50 for members), or $25 ($19) for the entire set. ••
