NE man overdoses in police custody

A Northeast man suspected of intoxicated driving died of an accidental drug overdose while in Philadelphia police custody on Jan. 30.

Daniel Wichterman, 29, of the 3700 block of Genesee Drive in Parkwood, was arrested at about 3 p.m. that day on suspicion of driving while under the influence after he was involved in a two-vehicle accident on the 2700 block of Holme Ave. No injuries were reported as a result of the crash.

Upon his arrest, Wichterman was taken to the police detention unit at Eighth and Race streets for processing. He was placed in a cell with another inmate. At about 10 p.m., staff members found him unconscious inside the cell. A staff nurse administered CPR as paramedics were called to the facility. Wichterman was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:31 p.m. The city’s medical examiner determined that the death was accidental and caused by drug intoxication. ••
