Hanukkah party at Temple Beth Ami
Temple Beth Ami, 9201 Old Bustleton Ave., will hold a Hanukkah party on Sunday, Dec. 13, at 10:30 a.m.

Santa Claus will appear at World of Animals, 6503 Frankford Ave., on Sunday, Dec. 13, to have his picture taken with pets.

Tacony historical society to meet
The Historical Society of Tacony will host a special community meeting on Monday, Dec. 14, at 6:30 p.m. at Tacony Library, 6742 Torresdale Ave.
The exclusive topic will be the establishment of what is known as the Disston Estate as a National Historic District. The nomination is pending, and members of the Society are expected to appear before the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in February to support the nomination.
Members of the Society and representatives from the PHMC and Preservation Design Partners will present an overview of the proposed Historic District and answer any questions attendees may have.
The proposed area extends from about Magee Avenue to Princeton Avenue, from Torresdale Avenue east to Keystone Street, and from about Magee Avenue to Tyson Avenue, from Torresdale Avenue west to Jackson, Gillespie and Cottage streets.
All residents living in and near the proposed Historic District are encouraged to attend.

Taylor holding series of drug meetings
State Rep. John Taylor (R-177th dist.) will host a series of community meetings called “A Path to Recovery” to enlighten residents on the challenges of drug addiction and recovery.
The first meeting will be held at the Mayfair Community Center, 2990 St. Vincent St., on Thursday, Dec. 10, from 7 to 9 p.m.
ldquo;We must develop an ongoing dialogue about drug rehabilitation, recovery and resources for the people of our community in response to the prescription pill and heroin crises,” Taylor said.
Speakers will include Mary Doherty from CORA, John Cooper from Self Help, and Sgt. Andrew Callahan from the narcotics division of the Philadelphia Police Department. Taylor will also show the video Some Goodbyes are Forever, which details the scope of the drug problem and the impact it’s had on local families.

Holiday Star Party at Friends Hospital

Christmas tree lighting in Holmesburg
There will be a Christmas tree lighting on Thursday, Dec. 10, at 6 p.m. at Holmesburg Recreation Center, at Rhawn and Ditman streets.
The event will include face painting, a balloon magician and snacks for children.

Fundraiser at FOP will benefit clean water program
The Engineers Without Borders Philadelphia Professional Chapter along with the Filipino Executive Council of Greater Philadelphia invites the community to a fundraising event to benefit the Water for Life Project in the Philippines.
A casual evening of networking, socializing, dining and dancing will be held on Thursday, Dec. 10, at 6 p.m. at FOP Lodge 5, 11630 Caroline Road.
Water for Life is an effort to bring clean water for drinking, bathing, cooking and laundering to impoverished areas in developing countries, where the available water is poor quality and bottled water is prohibitively expensive. Engineers Without Borders and the Filipino Executive Council are each 501(c)(3) organizations.
Cocktails will begin at 6 p.m. Draft beer and soft drinks are included with the admission. Dinner will follow at 6:30 p.m. and include a project status presentation.
Guests are welcome to dance from 7:30 p.m.

Gun buyback is Dec. 19
The 15th Police District Advisory Council will conduct a gun buyback on Saturday, Dec. 19, at the firehouse at Magee Avenue and Keystone Street.
Unloaded firearms can be surrendered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in exchange for $50 gift cards.
The New Barbera’s on the Boulevard is sponsoring the buyback.
