Kids can explore the sky at Star Party
The Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership invites all future stars to join the “journey through space” Star Party on Thursday, Aug. 20, from 6 to 9 p.m. on the campus of Friends Hospital at 4641 Roosevelt Blvd.
The party is organized by the City Skies community astronomy program, a collaborative of Turning Points for Children, the Franklin Institute and NASA. Kids will be able to build a telescope, gaze at the constellations and planets and take a walk along the Tacony Creek Park trail while enjoying games and snacks. Kids will have a chance to win a telescope too.

PPD to host Senior Safety Program
The Philadelphia Police Department’s Senior Safety Program will arrive at Holy Family University’s Campus Center on Aug. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All are welcome to attend for safety information, vendors, food and activities. Registration is required. The venue is at 9801 Frankford Ave.
There will be presentations and information provided by the Philadelphia Police Department, U.S. Attorney General’s Office, Philadelphia Corporation for Aging, Senior Law Center, CARIE, PECO, PWRB and other agencies. Free transportation is available upon request. To register, call 215–686–1224. ••
Community day is Saturday in Holmesburg
Holmesburg Civic Association will sponsor a community day on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Holmesburg Recreation Center, at Rhawn and Ditman streets. Hot dogs, drinks, chips and snow cones will be provided. Guests are asked to bring a dish, side or dessert to share. The day will include a crafts table and Moonbounce. ••

John Birch Society meeting in Holmesburg
The John Birch Society will hold a meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 25, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Holmesburg Recreation Center, at Rhawn and Ditman streets.

Preschool registration at Dorsey
Dorsey Playground, 6501 Hegerman St. in Tacony, will hold preschool registration on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m. The registration fee is $10. The cost is $70 per month. The school is open to children ages 3–5. The class will meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon.

Water Dept. to hold meetings
The Philadelphia Water Department will hold two upcoming community meetings.
The first meeting will take place on Monday, Aug. 24, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Max Myers Playground, 1601 Hellerman St.
The other meeting is set for Thursday, Aug. 27, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Moss Playground, at Torresdale and Cheltenham avenues.
The discussion at both meetings will be about landscaping improvements that will help soak up stormwater runoff and beautify the playgrounds.

Parkwood celebrating 50 years
Parkwood Youth Organization, 3301 Mechanicsville Road, will celebrate 50 years on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 1 to 5 p.m.
The day will include moon bounces, a petting zoo, carnival games, face-painting, balloon art, cotton candy, water ice, hot dogs and a dunk tank.

Glen Foerd concert on Aug. 20
The Monday Blues Swing Orchestra, a big band, will perform on Thursday, Aug. 20, from 7 to 8 p.m. at Glen Foerd on the Delaware, 5001 Grant Ave.
The concert will be held in the estate’s outdoor event structure overlooking the Delaware River.
Admission is pay what you wish. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Glen Foerd estate and the concert artists.
Guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs and pack a picnic dinner. The Dining Car will sell goods from its bakery. ••
