Jordan Konell, who now is attending Yale University, is among 32 Americans who will receive full financial support to pursue a degree or degrees at Oxford University in England. They were among 877 students who were nominated for the prestigious scholarship by their colleges and universities. They will begin their studies in Oxford in October 2015.

The scholarship honors the will and bequest of 19th-century businessman, politician and advocate of British colonialism Cecil J. Rhodes. The first American students to win the scholarships, according to the Rhodes Trust, began attending Oxford in 1904.

Konell, of Murty Lane, is the son of Susan Konell, who taught at Baldi Middle School. He is a product of the city’s public school system, having attended Loesche elementary, Baldi and Central High.

He’s pursued African-American studies and political science at Yale. He graduates from the New Haven, Conn., school in 2015.

His interest in political science, race and public policy began in his hometown. Along those lines, Konell, 21, will be studying comparative politics at Oxford. ••
