MaST Charter to host special event weekend
MaST Community Charter School will host its Raffle 2015 weekend from April 24 to 26 with proceeds to benefit the school’s new “Build It” zones and spaces.
The weekend will kick off on Friday, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., with Astronomy Night in partnership with the Franklin Institute, as well as Quizzo and the weekend’s main raffle basket event.
Saturday, from noon to 4 p.m., will feature characters, games, prizes, sponsors and contests, along with special ticket promotions and mechanical bull rides.
Sunday, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., will include characters, games, prizes, sponsors and contests, along with the money wheel and surfboard ride.

Holy Family sponsors caregiving symposium
Holy Family University’s Caregiving Symposium, sponsored by the School of Education, is an opportunity to learn about practical, personal and financial issues that are part of the caregiving experience for family, friends and others who take care of persons of all ages.
The April 25 symposium will provide informative workshops and presentations on caring for others who experience complications of aging, disability or trauma, as well as caring for self.
A keynote presentation will be given by Dr. Geralyn Anderson Arango, author of What Would Nola Do? What My Mother Taught Me About Showing Up, Being Present and the Art of Caregiving.

Piano recital will celebrate Frankford history
The Historical Society of Frankford will continue celebrating its 110th year by hosting a piano recital featuring Joseph Krupa on Sunday, April 26, at 3 p.m. at 1507 Orthodox St.

Part of Verree Road to be dedicated to fallen firefighter
State Rep. Kevin Boyle and Philadelphia Fire Department Deputy Commissioner Jesse Wilson will lead a host of dignitaries in helping to dedicate a portion of Verree Road in memory of fallen Firefighter Daniel Sweeney on Thursday, April 30.
The public is encouraged to attend the ceremony at 3:30 p.m. outside of Engine 56 at 832 Rhawn St. A portion of Verree Road between Rhawn and Kendrick streets will be dedicated in Sweeney’s name, while a new street sign will be presented to the fallen firefighter’s family.
Sweeney grew up in Fox Chase and resided there with his family while serving as a firefighter with Ladder 10 in Kensington. He was killed on April 9, 2012, in the aftermath of a five-alarm warehouse fire when a neighboring building collapsed on members of his squad. Lt. Robert Neary also died in the disaster. ••
Klein JCC will host a 40th anniversary festival on May 3
The Klein JCC, 10100 Jamison Ave., will host a 40th anniversary festival on Sunday, May 3, from 1 to 4 p.m.
There will be a live cabaret performance, sing-a-longs, face painting, caricatures, dance demonstrations and food.

Recycling buckets available

Fire photo event in Doylestown
Former Northeast Times photographer Larry Browne will present Shooting Fire: Memories of 30 Years as a Fire Scene Photographer on Saturday, May 2, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Mercer Museum, 84 S. Pine St. in Doylestown.
Browne is a volunteer with Doylestown Fire Company №1 and teaches classes in fire scene photography at the Bucks Public Safety Training Center. He is a former state fire instructor.

Accelerated nursing program available
The Frances M. Maguire School of Nursing and Health Professions at Gwynedd Mercy University has launched an Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, which will be offered at a new facility being reconstructed at 6th and Chestnut streets.
Designed for individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree in another field, the ABSN aims to produce future nursing leaders. The degree program takes as little as 15 months to complete.
The ABSN program consists of 69 credits, with topics that range from pharmacology and statistical analytics to global health and health policy.

Fundraising competition at Dave and Buster’s
The Martelli Games — a competition that pits teams of employees representing local businesses against each other in a series of challenging skill games — is coming to Dave and Buster’s in Philadelphia Mills (formerly Franklin Mills).
Dave and Buster’s will host the annual competition on Wednesday evening, June 10.
The competition and dinner that immediately follows will be hosted by Phil Martelli, head coach of the St. Joseph’s men’s basketball team.
Every dollar raised will go directly to Developmental Enterprises Corporation, the area’s largest nonprofit provider of tailored therapies, habilitation and vocational services to adults with intellectual challenges and other developmental disabilities.
Each participating team will be captained by a celebrity from the world of sports, business or entertainment.

Support group for parents of addicts
A new support and grieving group for parents of drug addicts will hold its first meeting on Tuesday, May 12, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Northeast GED Center, at 1928 Cottman Ave., between Castor and Loretto avenues.
The group is for parents who have lost children to drugs or have children using drugs.
Meetings will be held the second Tuesday of each month.
The group is being organized by Bonnie Kaye, a professional counselor who lost her daughter Jennifer to heroin in 2002. She has been working to help other parents since that time.
“The goal is to help parents whose children have died from drugs to get through the grieving process and to give support to others who are currently losing their children to drugs,” she said.

Houseman has summer camp
Houseman Recreation Center, 5091 Summerdale Ave., is holding signups for its summer day camp, which will run from July 7 to Aug. 14.
