Body of missing man found in river

A senior citizen from Bustleton who disappeared under mysterious circumstances more than three months ago was found on Friday afternoon. A jogger spotted Vito Maglio’s body in the Schuylkill River. Maglio had a gunshot wound of the head, according to a police source.

The discovery occurred shortly before 5 p.m. along Kelly Drive near Falls Bridge, the source said. The condition of the body appeared to indicate that the 69-year-old had been dead for more than a few hours or days. The medical examiner’s office confirmed his identity through dental and surgical records.

Homicide investigators have taken the case from Northeast Detectives, who had been in charge of the missing person probe.

Maglio, of the 2000 block of Gorman St., was last seen at about 6 p.m. on Dec. 14 as he left Macaroni’s Restaurant at 9315 Old Bustleton Ave. Police found Maglio’s unoccupied vehicle parked on an East Germantown street four days later. It had been torched, but there was no sign of Maglio.

As it’s now a homicide case, the city is offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killer. Call 215–686-TIPS or text to PPDTIP to report information. ••
