Am­a­teur bouts set for Sept. 5

The Har­rowg­ate Box­ing Club will host an even­ing of am­a­teur pu­gil­ism on Fri­day, Sept. 5, when the loc­al boys will take on the Holy Fam­ily Box­ing Club of Bel­fast, Ire­land, at Cannstat­ter’s, 9130 Academy Road. The 10-bout card starts at 7:30 p.m.

The friendly com­pet­i­tion is sanc­tioned by the Middle At­lantic As­so­ci­ation and by USA Box­ing. The event will kick off the an­nu­al North­east Philly Ir­ish Fest­iv­al at Cannstat­ter’s on Sat­urday and Sunday.

Tick­ets to the box­ing show will be sold at the gate for $30. Ad­vanced tick­ets cost $25 and can be pur­chased by call­ing 215-465-1778, 267-237-0746 or 267-246-5512. ••

La Casa Di Lu­cia show to be­ne­fit can­cer fight

The non­profit Show­time Char­it­ies Inc. will raise money to help fight ovari­an can­cer at an up­com­ing show at La Casa Di Lu­cia, 14425 Bustleton Ave. (at Philmont Av­en­ue) in Somer­ton.

The show, Trav­el­ing Across Amer­ica, is set for Monday, Sept. 8, at 7:30 p.m. The sing­ers will take the crowd on a mu­sic­al jour­ney around the United States.

Tick­ets cost $20. Pro­ceeds will be­ne­fit the Teal Tea Found­a­tion.

“All the money raised will stay right here in our com­munity and be dir­ec­ted to Teal Tea’s ‘Give a Girl a Lift’ pro­gram, which provides trans­port­a­tion to wo­men who are either too weak or too sick to drive them­selves to their treat­ments for ovari­an can­cer,” said Debbie Knight, pres­id­ent of Show­time Char­it­ies.

Bird walk is at Glen Fo­erd on the Delaware

Dis­cov­er the great vari­ety of bird life at Glen Fo­erd on the Delaware while en­joy­ing a beau­ti­ful late sum­mer morn­ing at the Glen Fo­erd Bird Walk on Sat­urday, Sept. 6, at 9 a.m. 

Tony Croas­dale of the Delaware Val­ley Or­ni­tho­lo­gic­al Club will be the guide. Cof­fee will be free to guests. All par­ti­cipants are en­cour­aged to bring bin­ocu­lars. 

The cost is $5 per per­son. Pre-re­gis­tra­tion is not re­quired. A tour of the man­sion will be­gin after the bird walk at 11 a.m. An ad­di­tion­al fee will be charged for the tour. ••

Holmes­burg Health Fair set for Sept. 6

The Holmes­burg Health Fair will take place on Sat­urday, Sept. 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cen­ter for Med­ic­al Ex­cel­lence, 8015-21 Frank­ford Ave.

There will be health screen­ings, doc­u­ment shred­ding, face-paint­ing, re­fresh­ments, giveaways and en­ter­tain­ment. ••

Church hosts block party Sat­urday

Sev­en Mile Road Church, 525 Welsh Road in Bustleton, in­vites the pub­lic to at­tend a block party on Sat­urday, Sept. 6, from 5 to 8 p.m.

The Jump City Jazz Or­ches­tra will per­form. There will be free swing dance les­sons, face-paint­ing and a Moon­bounce. Food will be avail­able for pur­chase, with pro­ceeds go­ing to Anne Frank Ele­ment­ary School.

Itali­an fest­iv­al slated for Sept. 7

Our Lady of Con­sol­a­tion Par­ish, at Prin­ceton Av­en­ue and Tulip Street in Ta­cony, will hold an Itali­an fest­iv­al on Sunday, Sept. 7. 

Mass will be cel­eb­rated at 11 a.m., fol­lowed by a street pro­ces­sion of people dressed as saints.

The fest­iv­al will run from 1 to 7 p.m., rain or shine. It will in­clude Itali­an food, Itali­an nov­el­ties, dan­cers, chil­dren’s rides and games and live en­ter­tain­ment by Philly Brass and the Elec­tric Band. ••

Pro­gram on St. Joachim’s is Sept. 9

The His­tor­ic­al So­ci­ety of Frank­ford, 1507 Or­tho­dox St., will present Frank­ford’s Faith Leg­acy: His­tor­ic St. Joachim’s Church: Loom­ing Large in Our Area’s His­tory on Tues­day, Sept. 9, at 7:30 p.m.

The event will be presen­ted by Pat Smi­ley, head of Keep the Faith in Frank­ford, an or­gan­iz­a­tion try­ing to per­suade the Vat­ic­an to re­open St. Joachim Church.

The cost is $5. Re­fresh­ments will be served.

Donate un­needed school uni­forms

School uni­forms that are still in good con­di­tion can be re­cycled, said Nafisah Lewis, co­ordin­at­or of North­east EPIC Stake­hold­ers. 

Clean uni­forms, fol­ded, not on hangers, can be dropped off Monday through Fri­day, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Taha Barber­shop, 4665 Frank­ford Ave.
