Officer Joseph Griffin was suspended by Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey on the same day. Griffin will be fired after a mandatory 30-day waiting period, according to a police department news release. The criminal charges against him are misdemeanors and include simple assault, terroristic threats, harassment, intimidation of a victim, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child. Typically, the child endangerment charge indicates that a child witnessed the alleged assault.

According to a news release issued by the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, the assault occurred on June 4 in the couple’s home. The DA’s office and the police department’s Internal Affairs Bureau investigated the case. Griffin surrendered to Internal Affairs on Sept. 11.

Griffin, 30, is an eight-year veteran of the police force who was assigned to the 3rd district in South Philadelphia. ••
