Burholme group holds inaugural meetings

The newly formed Burholme Business Association held its first two meetings recently at Wesley Enhanced Living, 7040 Oxford Ave. There were morning and evening meetings on Aug. 28.

The sessions were moderated by Al Taubenberger, president of the Burholme Community Town Watch and Civic Association and the Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s a great neighborhood, and we want to keep it great,” Taubenberger said.

Among those in attendance were state Rep. Brendan Boyle; Justine Bolkus, business services manager for the city Department of Commerce; and Kathy Wersinger, aide to City Councilwoman Marian Tasco.

“She’s excited about getting the businesses together,” Wersinger said of Tasco, who will soon open a trailer with the district attorney’s office near Rising Sun Avenue and Comly Street in Lawndale.

Taubenberger, Bolkus and Wersinger sit on the business association board with Don Garecht, vice president of the Burholme civic association and Town Watch, and Nick Himebaugh, Boyle’s deputy chief of staff.

Himebaugh tallied results from a business association survey. Merchants indicated that they believe there are too many vacancies on Rising Sun Avenue, and that lighting, streets and sidewalks are in need of repair. They want more police presence and trash cans.

Boyle, who has an office at 7215-B Rising Sun Ave., believes the Burholme community and businesses have a lot of potential. He pointed to the attractive housing, SEPTA bus routes and train station and the Rising Sun Avenue corridor. He mentioned that Fox Chase Cancer Center and Jeanes Hospital have plenty of employees who can shop in the neighborhood, and Taubenberger added that the U.S. Navy depot is not too far away.

“I look forward to being as supportive as I can,” said Boyle, who is running for Congress.

The business association will meet again on Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 6:30 p.m. at Wesley Enhanced Living. Officials from the 2nd Police District will be in attendance.

The Burholme civic association and Town Watch will meet on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. at United Methodist Church of the Redeemer, 1128 Cottman Ave. (at Lawndale Avenue). Guest speakers will be Amelia Dorminy, of Philadelphia’s Animal Care and Control, and Sherry Williams, of the School District of Philadelphia. The Quaker Diner will provide refreshments. ••
