Flea market and barbecue

Holmesburg United Methodist Church, 8118 Frankford Ave., will host Harvest Day on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The church is asking the public to bring a bag of nonperishable food items for its food cupboard and another bag of gently used household items for its second-hand shop, Ann’s Attic.

Proceeds from the flea market will help support programs and services of the church, including the daily meal program.

Flea vendor spaces are $15. Interested vendors should call 215–333–2561. ••

Russian festival set for Sept. 21

The Russian festival Matreshka will take place on Sunday, Sept. 21, from noon to 6 p.m. at Polanka Park, at 3258 Knights Road in Bensalem.

There will be food, live music, performances by youth groups, face-painting, pony rides, clowns and arts and crafts. ••

Volunteer for Sports Hall of Fame

The Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame will be holding a volunteer open house on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Spike’s Trophies, 2701 Grant Ave.

The open house will provide information on how individuals and businesses can become involved in the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame.

Northwood Charter to hold meetings

Northwood Academy Charter School, 4621 Castor Ave., has announced its board meeting schedule for the 2014–15 academic year. Most of the meetings will be held on the third Monday of each month at 5 p.m. at the school.

Here are the meetings dates: Sept. 15, Oct. 20, Nov. 17, Dec. 15, Jan. 20, Feb. 17, March 16, April 20, May 18, June 15 and Aug. 17. ••

Young adult program begins Sept. 15

Applications are being accepted for young adults interested in enrolling in the city Department of Streets’ Philly Future Track program.

The next class will begin on Sept. 15.

The six-month program provides job-skill training and real-world work experience for Philadelphians 18–24 years old.

Participants will work in teams to clean and beautify city streets. They will also complete an educational program to improve their job prospects.

2nd PDAC to host Community Day

The 2nd Police District Advisory Council’s Community Day will kick off at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, with a “Bike Ride for Peace” at the Target store at Bustleton and Bleigh avenues. Riders will bike through the district’s streets where the most crime occurs with a police escort. Riders will return to the Target parking lot by about 10:30 a.m. Activities to follow include child fingerprinting, vehicle identification etching, document shredding, and, new this year, an old ammunition turn-in. Old ammunition will be accepted for disposal by police.

Members of the police SWAT, bomb squad, mounted, homeland security, K-9, crime scene and DARE units will be on hand as will fire trucks and fire prevention displays. There will be city, state and federal information tables. ••

Concert Sunday at Bakers Bay

The Bakers Bay Civic Association will hold its annual Musicale on Sunday, Sept. 14, at 2 p.m. in the clubhouse auditorium at State Road and Convent Lane in East Torresdale.

Michael Philip O’Brien will perform popular Broadway musical selections.

Afterward, wine, cheeses, meats and iced tea will be served.
