Fire prevention seminar is Saturday
State Rep. James Clay Jr. (D-179th dist.) will partner with the men and women of Ladder 15 of the Philadelphia Fire Department to host a fire prevention seminar at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 1652 Foulkrod St. The event is open to the public.
Members of Ladder 15 will instruct attendees in fire prevention and fire safety. Winners of Clay’s Fire Prevention Art Contest will be announced at the seminar. The two school-aged contest winners will have their art displayed on billboards at the local firehouse for one year. The artists of the winning posters will also receive the opportunity to be a “Fireperson for a Day.” ••
Flea market/bazaar at Crescentville church
Crescentville United Methodist Church, 412 Sentner St., will hold a flea market and bazaar on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The deadline is Oct. 15 to apply for a grant from the Joseph C. McCloskey Charitable Fund.

Free breast cancer screenings available
As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Aria Health will host free breast screenings for uninsured and underinsured women. Medical staff from various Aria locations will be available to offer exams, teach self-exams and provide mammography services.
Screenings will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 8 a.m. to noon at Aria Health-Torresdale in the Medical Office Building at 3998 Red Lion Road; and on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 8 a.m. to noon at Aria Health-Bucks County, 380 N. Presentation on Duffy’s Cut is next week
Professor Bill Watson will give a public presentation on the history of Duffy’s Cut on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m. at Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 39, 7229 Tulip St. Admission is free but donations will be accepted.
Duffy’s Cut was the burial ground of as many as 57 Irish immigrant laborers who worked to build the Philadelphia & Columbia railroad near Malvern, Chester County, in 1832. The workers arrived in June with the promise of work from a fellow Irishman, Philip Duffy. Within six weeks, all of them were dead, either from Cholera or killed by vigilantes and buried in a mass grave near the railroad site.
In 2004, Watson and students from Immaculata University launched an archeological dig of the site that uncovered human remains and artifacts. ••
Local animal rescue group holding fundraiser
Northeast Animal Rescue will hold its second annual Pastabilities for Pets fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 5 p.m. at Franklin’s Pub, 3521 Bowman St. in East Falls.
Tickets cost $30 apiece, or two for $50. Admission includes dinner. There will be a cash bar, raffle and silent auction. If purchasing more than one ticket, be sure to include the names of all attending.

An upcoming charitable yard sale/flea market is looking for vendors.

Cancer walk in Pennypack Park
Judy’s Answer for Cancer 2.5k Walk/Run will take place on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Pennypack Park entrance near Rhawn Street and Holmehurst.

The interactive murder mystery Law and Murder will take place on Sunday, Oct. 19, at Corp. John Loudenslager American Legion Post №366, at 7976–78 Oxford Ave. in Fox Chase.
