Former Mayfair Civic leader dies at 53

Scott Cummings, former president of the Mayfair Civic Association and the 15th Police District Advisory Council, died on Monday in Florida. He was 53.

Cummings graduated from St. Matthew Grammar School, Father Judge High School and Mansfield University. He is survived by his former wife, Vicki, and their four children: Lindsay, 22; Cody, 20; John Scott, 11; and Logan, 5.

Besides heading the civic association and PDAC, Cummings was a former board member of the Holy Terrors Youth Organization and Mayfair Town Watch.

As a civic leader, he was an early champion of splitting the 15th Police District and building a smaller Abraham Lincoln High School that would cater to local students. He also worked alongside the Mayfair Business Association and pushed management of the former WOW Family Fun Center to crack down on the misbehavior of some of its clientele.

Politically, Cummings counted former Mayor Frank L. Rizzo as his idol. He had been Republican leader of the 62nd Ward. He was the GOP candidate in a 2006 special election for an at-large City Council seat. He ran for Traffic Court in 2007. In 2012, he positioned himself as a possible vice presidential running mate for Mitt Romney, with the Friendship Street resident declaring, “Amer-ica wants a row house guy.”

Cummings worked as a bodyguard for the likes of Henry Kissinger and Donald Trump. He also dabbled in celebrity boxing, though a planned bout at the Mayfair Community Center against Jose Canseco never materialized.

“Scott did a lot for the neighborhood,” said Joe DeFelice, chairman on the Mayfair Community Development Corporation. “He had a lot of excellent ideas. He genuinely cared about the community. I think Mayfair is a better place because of Scott.” ••
