The Friends of Pennypack Park joined forces with the Delaware River City Corporation to remove 18 bags of trash from the Pennypack on the Delaware park on Sept. 27.

Thirteen volunteers spent a combined 43.5 hours in the park, which surrounds the confluence of the Pennypack Creek and Delaware River. The entrance is on State Road just south of Rhawn Street.

Participants included Mariann Dempsey, Lu Branigan, Cindy Masiejczyk, Betty Landolfi, David Perri, Michael Perri, Frank Keaney, Ty Tyson, Rich Glaser, Karen Kaczorek, Kevin Sweetra, Joyce Ferraro and Nance Kerns. DRCC staff members also took part, including Tom Branigan, Jim Fries and Alexia Sotirchos, while the 8th Police District, the Philadelphia Sanitation Division, ShopRite and Keep PA Beautiful provided support and supplies.

In addition to 18 bags of trash, participants collected one bag of recyclable cans, two auto tires, a plastic hanger, two fishing bobbers, two broken fishing poles, four flip-flops, a sandal, a sock, a snow brush, eight feet of PVC pipe, a six-foot two-by-four, a pile of bricks, the rear wheels from a Big Wheel and a decorative plastic gourd.

The cleanup preceded the start of construction on the DRCC’s new trail connecting Pennypack on the Delaware with Pleasant Hill Park. The trail will be part of the East Coast Greenway, an interstate trail system running from Maine to Florida.

The next monthly cleanup in Pennypack Park will be on Saturday, Oct. 25, in the area of Sandy Run at Ryan Avenue and Sandyford Road. Volunteers will meet at 10 a.m. and work until 1 p.m., weather permitting. The public is welcome to take part. Participants should wear long pants and closed shoes. Call 215–934-PARK for information in case of inclement weather. ••
