Former state Sen. Bill Stinson died last week. He was 70.
Stinson is survived by his wife, two daughters, two sons, mom, nine grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Stinson was a businessman and Democratic leader of the 33rd Ward.
In 1990, he finished third in a four-way Democratic primary in the 2nd Senatorial District. Sen. Frank Lynch won the primary.
In 1991, Stinson ran in the Democratic primary in the 7th Councilmanic District, but lost to Dan McElhatton by 17 votes.
In 1993, Stinson resigned as assistant deputy mayor for economic development to run in a special election in the 2nd Senatorial District, following the death of Frank Lynch.
On Election Day that November, he defeated Republican Bruce Marks by 461 votes and was sworn into office.
However, in April 1994, a federal judge overturned the election, citing absentee-ballot irregularities, giving the victory to Marks. ••
