Before you secure your valuable possessions in a storage facility, police want you to know that not all storage facilities are as secure as you might expect. In fact, burglars have been targeting storage units in the Northeast with increasing frequency, according to Northeast Detectives.
In one local case, surveillance video recorded two crooks as they broke into several units at Extra Space Storage, 1553 Grant Ave., early on Oct. 6. In fact, the men spent several uninterrupted hours at the facility as they broke into numerous units and removed their contents. The men packed the stolen items into a pickup truck and fled at about 4 a.m.
Other burglaries occurred at Public Storage, 1251 Byberry Road, between 5 p.m. on Sept. 21 and 11 a.m. on Sept. 22; as well as Public Storage, 6225 Oxford Ave., between 2 and 6 p.m. on Sept. 30. Police did not specify why it took so long for operators of the storage facilities to notice or report that the crimes had occurred.
Detectives have gleaned minimal descriptions of the Oct. 6 burglars, stating only that they were two men of unknown race in a newer model pickup truck, possibly with an extended cab. It is unknown if the same culprits are responsible for the other burglaries.
Police have released a photo from the Oct. 6 incident, but it shows what appears to be a white or light-colored van in the foreground, with a dark, grainy image of a man with a hand truck in the frame and dimly lit storage units in the background.
