Hundreds of volunteers are expected to sweep through the Frankford commercial corridor on Saturday.
Sanya Brown, Northeast coordinator for the city’s PhillyRising Collaborative, last week told members of the Frankford Business and Professional Association that the volunteers will be cleaning up Frankford Avenue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8.
Brown and Kimberly Washington, executive director of the Frankford Community Development Corporation, said they’re expecting many volunteers from the Bucks County-based Travis Manion Foundation, but they’re hoping for neighborhood organizations and individuals to turn out at 10 a.m. on Nov. 8 at St. Mark’s Church, 4442 Frankford Ave.
Brown said volunteers will work in 10 sections from the 4200 block of Frankford Avenue to the 5200 block. They’ll also clean up to a block away on each side of the Avenue, she said. Brooms, bags, gloves and other tools will be provided, Brown said, but volunteers are free to bring their own gear. Lunch will be provided, too.
The big cleanup also is being supported by the Philadelphia Streets Department, the Police Department, Northeast Treatment Centers, the city’s Community Life Improvement Program, Turning Points for Children and the Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership.
Anyone who wants to sign up as a volunteer for this Day for Service in Honor of Veterans Day should call Brown at 215–686–8413 or Christine Dejesus, the CDC’s Neighborhood Advisory Council coordinator, at 215–743–6580. However, anyone who wants to join in can show up at St. Mark’s at about 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 8. ••
