Get ready for some cheering

Calvary Athletic Association on Deer Path Lane in Millbrook will be hosting a “cheerleading spirit night” from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 26. AA teams will perform the routines.

Reserve now for ‘Schlachtfest’

Reservations for the Danube Swabian Association’s annual dinner featuring homemade meats, sausages, soups, appetizers and desserts should be made by Nov. 10.

Hibernians looking for new members

Division 17 of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians is looking for men and women to join the group.

The men meet at different locations on the second Friday of each month. The women meet on the first Friday of each month at 8 p.m. at Division 39, Tulip Street and Cottman Avenue in Tacony.

Holmesburg Library to reopen Nov. 12

Holmesburg Library is expected to reopen on Wednesday, Nov. 12, assuming work to repair a broken underground pipe has been completed.

The collapsed main drain line caused plumbing issues on Oct. 11, and the library has been closed since then. To speed up the process of reopening the branch, located at 7810 Frankford Ave. (at Hartel Avenue), the city waived a bidding process and expedited the hiring of General Asphalt to perform the work. The cost will be $42,000.

Even though the library remains closed, returns can be placed in a drop box inside the front entrance. Late fees will be forgiven. Orders can be picked up at Torresdale Library, 3079 Holme Ave. ••

Chamber to honor hospital, two businesses

The Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce will honor Nazareth Hospital, Rodney C. Sandmeyer of Sandmeyer Steel Co. and Dietz & Watson at its 92nd Annual Accolades Celebration on Friday, Nov. 7, at Brookside Manor at Somerton Springs, 50 Bustleton Pike in Feasterville.

A cocktail reception will begin at 6 p.m., followed by presentations, dinner and entertainment at 7:30 p.m. Music will be provided by GNPCC member Gary Grisafi and his band Blu Dogz.

Taylor, Henon hosting town hall

State Rep. John Taylor and City Councilman Bobby Henon will co-host a community town hall meeting with Capt. John McCloskey, commander of the 15th Police District, on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 6:30 p.m. at Bridesburg Recreation Center, 4625 Richmond St.

Applications taken for Orleans program

Orleans Technical Institute, 2770 Red Lion Road, is accepting applications for its skills training program in Property Maintenance and Repair, which begins on Nov. 7.

This free program, called Project WOW (World of Work), is for Philadelphians ages 18 to 21 who have dropped out of high school. This is a 16-week trades diploma program held Monday through Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. and includes GED preparation twice a week. Students learn basic skills in carpentry, plumbing, electrical and weatherization.

Transportation money is provided, and GED testing fees are paid for by the program.

Family assistance workshop set for Nov. 15

PECO Energy, Philadelphia Gas Works, the Utilities Emergency Services Fund and the Energy Coordinating Agency will be on hand for a “Family Assistance Workshop” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 4625 Frankford Ave.

LIHEAP applications will be processed on the spot. Energy-efficient lightbulbs will be given out as will weatherization kits.

Glen Foerd hosts a masterly event

Glen Foerd on the Delaware at 5001 Grant Ave. invites visitors to explore their artistic side while enjoying some adult beverages on Friday, Nov. 7, at the BYOB Paint Night from 8 to 10 p.m. The registration deadline is Nov. 5.

Guests will be able to enjoy a fun night with friends while painting original masterpieces. Ann Sobieski, owner of Blue Sky Art Studio, will lead artists step by step through the process of laying paint onto canvas.

The event is limited to adults 21 and older.

‘Little Women’ at St. Hubert’s

St. Hubert High School will present three performances of the musical Little Women.

Show times are 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 7–8 and 2 p.m. on Nov. 9. Advance tickets cost $8, or $4 for senior citizens and students. Tickets at the door cost $10, or $5 for seniors and students. Children under 5 will be admitted free.

Church celebrates anniversary

Crescentville United Methodist Church, at Sentner Street and Hasbrook Avenue, will celebrate its 94th anniversary on Sunday, Nov. 9.

There will be a 10 a.m. worship, followed by a covered-dish luncheon and installation of the newly formed men’s organization. Members and friends are asked to bring a family favorite recipe.

Cow Chip Bingo at Comly School

Watson Comly Elementary School, at 1001 Byberry Road in Somerton, will hold a Cow Chip Bingo event on Saturday, Nov. 8, from noon to 4 p.m.

People can buy a space on a grass bingo card for $20. A prize of up to $3,000 will be awarded to an individual if Luna the cow does her “business” on a certain space. More than 10 food trucks will be on site. There will also be moonbounces, children’s crafts and games.

Cleanup Overington Park Nov. 8

Volunteers are needed to help clean up Overington Park, Orthodox and Pilling streets, on Saturday, Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers should wear old clothes. ••
