Wissinoming Civic discusses holiday plans at meeting

The new Wissinoming Civic Association had a lot of planning to do during its monthly meeting on Nov. 18.

Members spent much of the time putting the finishing touches on their participation in last Sunday’s Mayfair-Holmesburg Thanksgiving Parade, but they also began charting out the agenda for next month’s Interfaith Holiday Tree Lighting at St. Bartholomew Church, Harbison and Cheltenham avenues.

The tree lighting will be on Saturday, Dec. 13, on the front lawn of the church, facing busy Harbison Avenue. Organizers have selected a majestic, healthy evergreen to adorn with lights and decorations. The event is expected to start at 5 p.m.

All members of the community, regardless of religious affiliation, are welcome to participate. Refreshments will be served and visitors will have access to an indoor hall if they need to step out of the cold. In an effort to cover its expenses, the civic association is hoping to sell bows for a nominal fee that visitors can place on the tree. For more information, visit the Wissinoming Civic Association “community organization” page on Facebook.

In other WCA activities, President John Barnes reported that Shop Rite has made a generous donation to the civic group’s holiday food drive. The WCA seeks recommendations of families who may need help with meals in the coming weeks. Also, the WCA is collecting coats, winter hats, gloves and other items to help needy families beat the cold. For information, email to wissinomingcivicassociation@hotmail.com. Additional contact information is on the Facebook page.

The WCA will not meet in December due to the holiday schedule. The January meeting is planned for Jan. 27 at Wissinoming Park, Cheltenham Avenue and Charles Street, at 7 p.m. ••
