Crash outside of Northeast High kills woman

A woman was killed and a man injured critically in a multicar crash outside of Northeast High School on Nov. 12.

Police accident investigators believe that the woman, 21, was driving a 2001 Toyota Corolla northbound on the 7200 block of Algon Ave. shortly after 4 a.m. when her car collided with a 2014 Nissan Altima that was traveling eastbound on the 1600 block of Cottman Ave. The impact occurred in the intersection. The woman was ejected from her car and came to rest underneath another vehicle. Paramedics took her to Aria Health’s Torresdale Campus, where she died at 6:37 a.m. as a result of internal injuries.

The other motorist, 66, reportedly suffered a broken neck and was hospitalized in critical but stable condition at Aria-Torresdale. The impact propelled his car through a fence and into the front yard of the school. The car remained on the lawn later that morning as students arrived for classes and police were continuing their investigation.

Police did not release the identities of the victims. There were no passengers in either vehicle. Police did not disclose a suspected cause of the crash. There is a traffic signal at the intersection. ••
