Friends of Pennypack Park holds monthly cleanup

Community volunteers, including families from Father Judge, St. Hubert’s and Central high schools, Holy Family University students and parishioners from St. Matthew’s Roman Catholic and St. David’s Lutheran churches, joined the Friends of Pennypack Park for the group’s monthly cleanup event on Oct. 25.

The workers collected 56 bags of litter, two bags of aluminum cans and assorted debris from the park in the area of Ryan Avenue and Sandyford Road, as well as Sandy Run. In addition, volunteer Alan Ostrow went to the other side of Roosevelt Boulevard and collected two additional bags of trash from the area of Winchester and Old Bustleton avenues. In all, they logged 96 volunteer hours.

Other volunteers included Conor and Lisa Plunkett; Ashton, Sierra and David Landzinski; Vincent, Justin and Kate Damohray; Grant Gwiazdowski; Henry, Diane and Joe Grant; Emily, Thomas and Denise Eiler; Tom Lafferty; Sally Hang; Christina and Lisa Thomas; Julio Guzman; Anna Arita; Roland Williams; Joe Zador; Dana Curran; Yolanda Bunch; Colm Bane; Betty Landolfi; Rich Glaser; Karen Kaczorek; Robert McMunn; Cindy Masiejczyk; Kevin Sweetra; Joyce Ferraro; and Nance Kerns.

In addition to the items placed in bags, volunteers removed two tires, a shopping cart, a bag of groceries, a wicker chair, a hose, a driver’s license, a Central High ID, a pallet for potted plants, a director’s chair, part of a metal folding chair, a hand truck, a plant dolly, part of a window screen frame, a mobile phone, a Thermos, part of a granite countertop, a dishwasher, a flashlight, upholstery springs, a candy cane lawn decoration, broken resin chairs, iron brackets from a bench, bricks, cinder blocks, a five-gallon bucket of paint, a toddler girl’s clothing, shirts and pants, a rain coat, hubcaps, bike frames, a broken golf club, a broken fishing pole, a water pistol, a hockey stick, snow sleds, a sign post, a wooden dolly, orange snow fencing and advertising signs, including one promoting a junk removal service.

The Community Life Improvement Program, Department of Parks and Recreation and Philadelphia Police Department also contributed to the project.

The final Friends of Pennypack Park cleanup event of the year is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 22, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers are welcome and will meet at Rhawn Street and Lexington Avenue. Those under 18 should be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers should wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. The FOPP will supply equipment and refreshments.
