Archbishop Ryan student wins regatta art contest

A work of art: Kathy Nguy­en earned the grand prize for the second con­sec­ut­ive year in the an­nu­al Ab­er­deen Dad Vail Regatta Art Con­test.

Arch­bish­op Ry­an High School stu­dent Kathy Nguy­en earned the grand prize for the second con­sec­ut­ive year in the an­nu­al Ab­er­deen Dad Vail Regatta Art Con­test. North­east-based stu­dents won sev­en of 11 total awards.

Nguy­en’s win­ning paint­ing de­picts an eight-man crew row­ing down the Schuylkill River past a boat­house with the Phil­adelphia sky­line in the back­ground. Oth­er award win­ners in­cluded Ry­an’s Robert Brew­ster with first place, Ry­an’s Al­ex­an­dra Freed­man with second place and Alicia Rini­er of St. Hubert’s with third place. Hon­or­able men­tion awards went to Samuel Owusu of North­east High, along with Ana­stas­ia Oliv­er­as-Ri­os and Hay­ong Lee of Arch­bish­op Ry­an.

The artists’ chal­lenge was to paint im­ages that de­pict Amer­ica’s largest and best-known col­legi­ate row­ing regatta. The con­test is meant to pro­mote the regatta and pro­mote the sport of row­ing among high school stu­dents. Mem­bers of the Dad Vail or­gan­iz­ing com­mit­tee, the Of­fice of Cath­ol­ic Edu­ca­tion and the School Dis­trict of Phil­adelphia judged the art­work. ••
