Benefit set for NE native battling cancer

A be­ne­fit is be­ing planned for Holmes­burg nat­ive Jerry Hart­man, a liv­er and colon can­cer pa­tient known to many as a friend, coach, ment­or and teach­er.

The be­ne­fit is set for Sunday, March 23, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Fraternal Or­der of Po­lice Lodge 5 Her­oes Ball­room, 11630 Car­oline Road. Tick­ets cost $40 and in­clude live mu­sic, food, draft beer, $2 do­mest­ic bottled beer and oth­er re­duced drink prices, si­lent auc­tions and raffles. Pro­ceeds will go to Hart­man’s mount­ing med­ic­al bills. He was dia­gnosed with can­cer last year.

Hart­man is a former po­lice of­ficer who worked closely with the Ta­cony Po­lice Ath­let­ic League. He also was a suc­cess­ful bas­ket­ball coach for St. Bern­ard CYO. And he’s coached at St. Hubert, Penn State, Penn Charter and Wis­sahick­on Middle School and High School. He’s been a teach­er at Wis­sahick­on Middle School since 2002.
