New Port Rich­mond group

The Port Rich­mond Ac­tion Com­munity As­so­ci­ation West, a new Port Rich­mond re­gistered com­munity or­gan­iz­a­tion, will hold its first meet­ing on Wed­nes­day, March 12, at 6:30 p.m. at Mem­ph­is Street Academy, 2950 Mem­ph­is St. The group will vote on the pro­posed Grace Town­homes de­vel­op­ment, a 36-unit com­plex for low-in­come renters at 2201 E. Au­burn St. ••

Bible study

On Wed­nes­day even­ings through March 12, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Moth­er of Di­vine Grace Par­ish will be con­duct­ing a Bible study. Eat, drink, play

Eat Drink Play, the Kearny Ele­ment­ary Home/School As­so­ci­ation’s first ma­jor fun­draiser, will be held on Fri­day, March 14, at 6:30 p.m. at Liberti Church East, 2424 E. York St., Suite 122. There will be a si­lent auc­tion of items from Phil­adelphia based busi­nesses and artists, in­clud­ing Za­hav Res­taur­ant and Liz Kinder Ceram­ics. There will be food from Chive Caf&ea­cute;, a wine tast­ing and an open bar with re­gion­al craft beers. Tick­ets will be avail­able at the door and at Event­brite.com. The event will raise money to sup­port Play­works at Kearny Ele­ment­ary School. Play­works is an or­gan­iz­a­tion that teaches con­flict res­ol­u­tion through play. Learn more at play­works.org. South Kens­ing­ton Com­munity Part­ners and Fin­anta are host­ing free tax prep on Fri­day, March 14, and all Fri­days in March, at 1301 N. 2nd St. Call 215-427-3463 to make an ap­point­ment. ••

Soft­ball league

The Port Rich­mond Soft­ball League, a men’s slow-pitch league us­ing wooden bats, has a few open­ings left. Games will be played at vari­ous fields in Port Rich­mond. The league will run weeknights from mid-April un­til Ju­ly. For more in­form­a­tion, call 215-685-9894 or 215-685-9880. ••

Fishtown Fu­sion try­outs

The Fishtown Fu­sion girls soc­cer team will be hold­ing try­outs on Sat­urday, March 15, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, March 16, from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Monkiewicz Play­ground Back Field, 3201 Rich­mond St. Girls must have been born between Au­gust 1, 2006 and Ju­ly 31, 2007 (en­ter­ing second grade in the fall). Pri­or ex­per­i­ence is not re­quired but cur­rent play­ers are ex­per­i­enced. If the num­ber of play­ers try­ing out al­lows, there may be mul­tiple teams. Back­yard chick­ens

Greens­grow Farms, 2501 E. Cum­ber­land St., will host a back­yard chick­ens work­shop on Sat­urday, March 15, from 12 to 2 p.m. Mari­anne Mor­ris­on, who has worked with the avi­ary team at the Phil­adelphia Zoo, will teach the ups and downs of rais­ing chick­ens in Phil­adelphia. Chinese Auc­tion

Brides­burg Re­cre­ation Cen­ter, at 4625 Rich­mond St., will host this event on Sunday, March 16. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and the draw­ings start at 2 p.m. There is a $2 en­trance dona­tion, which in­cludes a tick­et for a Tar­get gift card draw­ing. There are more than 200 bas­kets and prizes. Fishtown Neigh­bors As­so­ci­ation will meet on Tues­day, March 18, at 7 p.m. at the Fishtown Re­cre­ation Cen­ter, 1202 E. Mont­gomery Ave. At­tendees will be able to vote on a pro­pos­al for a four-story multi-fam­ily build­ing, with first floor in­dus­tri­al use and off-street park­ing, at 958 Shack­amax­on St. All res­id­ents of Fishtown are eli­gible to vote. Please bring proof of res­id­ence or busi­ness own­er­ship in the form of a driver’s li­cense or a photo ID and a lease, util­ity bill, or re­cent piece of mail ad­dressed to your home or busi­ness. ••

Rich­mond book club

The Rich­mond Book Club will meet on Thursday, March 20, and the third Thursday of each month, at 6:15 p.m. This month the dis­cus­sion will be on the 2014 One Book, One Phil­adelphia title, The Yel­low Birds, by Kev­in Powers.  Next month on April 17, Home by Mar­ilynn Robin­son is the se­lec­tion. Spa­ghetti din­ner 

Boy Scouts of Amer­ica Troop 11 will be host­ing a spa­ghetti din­ner at the Fire Uni­on Hall, 2500 Le­fevre St., on Sunday, March 23. Tick­ets can be bought in ad­vance at Grace Church, 2645 Ven­ango St., on Mondays between 5 and 8 p.m.  There will be a Chinese auc­tion and a 50/50 chance.  The event is a fun­draiser for sum­mer camp. Din­ner will in­clude spa­ghetti and meat­balls, gar­lic bread and more. Tick­ets cost $10 in ad­vance and $12.00 at the door for adults and $5 in ad­vance and $6 at the door for chil­dren un­der 12. ••

Kens­ing­ton Com­munity Food Co-op spon­sors a mar­ket­place event on Tues­day, March 25, and every 2nd and 4th Tues­day of the month, from 6 to 8 p.m. on the 2nd floor of Circle of Hope, 2009 Frank­ford Ave. Shop­pers can pur­chase sea­son­al pro­duce and bulk dry goods such as beans, grains and gran­ola at the bi-monthly mar­ket­place.  Bring your own con­tain­ers and bags. Com­munity health fair

St. Anne’s Seni­or Com­munity Cen­ter, 2607 E. The first lec­ture in the CARES (CAre­givers RE­du­cing Stress) care­giver sup­port pro­gram lec­ture series will be on Wed­nes­day, March 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at Luther­an Set­tle­ment House, 1340 Frank­ford Av­en­ue. PRCG meet­ing

Port Rich­mond Com­munity Group will have its monthly meet­ing on Thursday, March 27, at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Help Chris­ti­ans Church base­ment on Al­legheny Av­en­ue at Gaul Street. 

The group will meet with new 24th Po­lice Dis­trict com­mand­ing of­ficer Capt. Daniel O’Con­nor, Lieu­ten­ant John Mc­Crory of the 24th Nar­cot­ics Unit and a cer­ti­fied ad­dic­tions coun­selor to dis­cuss drug use and sales in the area. State Rep. Penny Party

The Amer­ic­an Le­gion Aux­il­i­ary Unit 88 will hold their an­nu­al Penny Party fun­draiser on Sat­urday, March 29, at Elm Tree Post 88, 1414 Palmer Street.  Ad­mis­sion is $3, which in­cludes a bever­age, slice of cake and en­vel­ope of tick­ets.  Ad­di­tion­al tick­ets will be on sale for $1 per en­vel­ope, as well as 50/50 chances, large prize raffle tick­ets and re­fresh­ments.  Doors will open at 1 p.m. and the party be­gins at 2 p.m.

Chili cookoff

Fishtown Neigh­bors As­so­ci­ation is look­ing for con­test­ants for its 4th An­nu­al Chili Cookoff. The event will be held on Sunday, March 30, from 1 to 4 p.m. at 2424 E. Brides­burg Rec activ­it­ies

Zumba classes will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 7 to 8 p.m. Zumba ton­ing classes will be held on Wed­nes­days at the same time. The fee for all classes is $4 per per­son. 

Scrap­book­ing will be held on Wed­nes­day even­ings from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per class. You only need your pho­tos and a book. 

A ladies bowl­ing league will be held Tues­day morn­ings at 9 a.m. at Erie Lanes. The cost is $10 per week, which in­cludes bowl­ing and prize money. For more in­form­a­tion, call 215-685-1247.
