7th PDAC honors officer

Officer Randy Vogt has been named Officer of the Month for May in the 7th Police District. Members of the 7th Police District Advisory Council presented Vogt with the award during the council’s monthly meeting on June 19.

Vogt captured a thief in the act of breaking into a car on May 29. Shortly after midnight, the officer went to the 700 block of Solly Ave. in response to a 911 call. A witness met him at the scene and directed him to the suspected thief, who appeared to be rummaging through a parked car about one block away.

Vogt approached the man and saw cell phone cases and chargers on the ground at his feet. When the officer confronted the man, the man admitted that he had been searching for loose change. The car owner arrived at the scene and confirmed that he had not given the suspect permission to enter the vehicle.

Although not a violent crime, thefts from vehicles have become a persistent problem in the 7th district, so Vogt’s action was vital in helping police combat the crime category.

Vogt is no stranger to the Officer of the Month Award. He won it three times in 2013. ••
