Local students awarded memorial scholarships

The Joseph C. Mc­Clo­s­key Char­it­able Fund re­cently awar­ded two schol­ar­ships dur­ing a ce­re­mony at An­cient Or­der of Hi­ber­ni­ans Di­vi­sion 39, 7229 Tulip St. in Ta­cony.

Heath­er Wood won the Eliza­beth Mc­Clo­s­key Me­mori­al Schol­ar­ship. She will be at­tend­ing Chest­nut Hill Col­lege.

George Ab­bott won the John C. Sul­li­van Jr. Me­mori­al Schol­ar­ship. He will be at­tend­ing Holy Fam­ily Uni­versity.

Each win­ner re­ceived a cer­ti­fic­ate and $2,000 to­ward their col­lege tu­ition.

The fund is named in memory of Joseph C. “Goople” Mc­Clo­s­key (1920-1990), a Ta­cony nat­ive who gradu­ated from St. Leo Gram­mar School and North Cath­ol­ic High School.

In 1946, he joined the Phil­adelphia Po­lice De­part­ment, and spent many of his years work­ing with youths at the Po­lice Ath­let­ic League. He re­tired in 1984.

Mc­Clo­s­key is a mem­ber of the PAL, North Cath­ol­ic and Pennsylvania Sports Halls of Fame. ••
