Essay contest winners announced

Win­ning writers: The Burholme Com­munity Town Watch and Civic As­so­ci­ation honored five chil­dren for win­ning an es­say con­test. They wrote es­says on what they liked about Burholme.

Burholme Com­munity Town Watch and Civic As­so­ci­ation re­cently honored five win­ners of an es­say con­test.

Chil­dren were in­vited to write es­says on what they liked about Burholme.

The win­ners were Mi­kaela Tra­jano and Isai­ah Sassine, of Kennedy Crossan Ele­ment­ary School; Kath­ryn Mc­Dou­gall, of St. Kath­er­ine of Si­ena; Cienna Hart­nett, of Present­a­tion BVM; and Mari­am Ca­mara, of Im­manuel Luther­an.

The win­ners re­ceived cer­ti­fic­ates of ap­pre­ci­ation, gift cer­ti­fic­ates to the Quaker Diner, free mini­ature golf play at Burholme Fam­ily En­ter­tain­ment Cen­ter and free Frost­ies at Wendy’s for the rest of the year.

Mean­while, state Rep. Mark Co­hen (D-202nd dist.) men­tioned that he ex­pec­ted pas­sage of the state budget to pos­sibly ex­tend to early Ju­ly. His pri­or­it­ies are pub­lic edu­ca­tion fund­ing and Medi­caid ex­pan­sion. Co­hen won May’s Demo­crat­ic primary by 158 votes over Jared So­lomon.

Guests at the June 12 meet­ing en­joyed wa­ter ice and soft pret­zels cour­tesy of the of­fices of state Sen. Tina Tartagli­one and state Rep. Brendan Boyle.

Burholme Com­munity Town Watch and Civic As­so­ci­ation will meet again on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. at United Meth­od­ist Church of the Re­deem­er, at Cottman and Lawndale av­en­ues. ••
