Re­cycle your Christ­mas trees

The city’s Christ­mas tree re­cyc­ling pro­gram will run through Sat­urday, Jan. 18.

Cit­izens can take their trees to the De­part­ment of Streets’ san­it­a­tion con­veni­ence cen­ter at State Road and Ash­burn­er Street. The cen­ter is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Sat­urday.

Trees should be un­tied and free of all dec­or­a­tions. They must not be in plastic bags.

Oth­er Christ­mas items that can be re­cycled in­clude wrap­ping pa­per, greet­ing cards and gift tags and boxes. ••

Free work­shops for stu­dents

Free col­lege read­i­ness work­shops for Phil­adelphia stu­dents and par­ents will take place on Monday, Jan. 20, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Gir­ard Col­lege, at 2101 S. Col­lege Ave.

The work­shops are be­ing offered as part of the Mar­tin Luth­er King Day of Ser­vice. They are open to stu­dents in middle and high school and their par­ents.

Vo­lun­teers needed

RS­VP Phil­adelphia is seek­ing vo­lun­teers 55 and older to tu­tor or ment­or stu­dents at South­wark Ele­ment­ary School, at 1835 S. 9th St. in South Phil­adelphia.

In­di­vidu­als in­ter­ested in vo­lun­teer­ing can at­tend a pro­gram on Thursday, Jan. 23, at South­wark. There will be re­gis­tra­tion and a light break­fast at 10 a.m., fol­lowed by a one-hour pro­gram at 10:30.

RS­VP Phil­adelphia is based at the Klein JCC, at 10100 Jam­is­on Ave.

Vo­lun­teers are needed two to four hours per week to work at South­wark, which of­fers classes from kinder­garten through eighth grade.
