Recycle your Christmas trees

The city’s Christmas tree recycling program will run through Saturday, Jan. 18.

Citizens can take their trees to the Department of Streets’ sanitation convenience center at State Road and Ashburner Street. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Trees should be untied and free of all decorations. They must not be in plastic bags.

Other Christmas items that can be recycled include wrapping paper, greeting cards and gift tags and boxes. ••

Free workshops for students

Free college readiness workshops for Philadelphia students and parents will take place on Monday, Jan. 20, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Girard College, at 2101 S. College Ave.

The workshops are being offered as part of the Martin Luther King Day of Service. They are open to students in middle and high school and their parents.

Volunteers needed

RSVP Philadelphia is seeking volunteers 55 and older to tutor or mentor students at Southwark Elementary School, at 1835 S. 9th St. in South Philadelphia.

Individuals interested in volunteering can attend a program on Thursday, Jan. 23, at Southwark. There will be registration and a light breakfast at 10 a.m., followed by a one-hour program at 10:30.

RSVP Philadelphia is based at the Klein JCC, at 10100 Jamison Ave.

Volunteers are needed two to four hours per week to work at Southwark, which offers classes from kindergarten through eighth grade.
