Local schools celebrate Catholic Schools’ Week

Stu­dents at St. Lauren­ti­us School and Our Lady of Port Rich­mond School cel­eb­rated Cath­ol­ic Schools Week at the end of Janu­ary with com­munity ser­vice and guest speak­ers.

Our Lady of Port Rich­mond School kicked off cel­eb­ra­tions with “Mag­nan­im­ous Monday,” a day of ser­vice, on Monday, Jan. 27. More than 400 stu­dents, staff and vo­lun­teers joined to­geth­er to serve the com­munity. 

Activ­it­ies var­ied by grade.  Second graders made and dec­or­ated get-well cards for hos­pit­al­ized mem­bers of the com­munity, while sev­enth and eighth graders made sand­wiches and as­sembled bagged lunches for the home­less. 

Oth­er pro­jects in­cluded mak­ing pray­er cards for troops in the Armed Forces, dec­or­at­ing place mats a loc­al soup kit­chen and dis­trib­ut­ing hand­writ­ten thank-you notes for the school’s neigh­bors. 

“It was a re­mark­able day,” prin­cip­al Sis­ter Mary Ripp said in a press re­lease. “We could not think of a bet­ter way to launch Cath­ol­ic Schools Week 2014 than by tak­ing the best of who we are and giv­ing back to the people of this com­munity.” 

At St. Lauren­ti­us School, stu­dents got to take part in Vo­ca­tion Day on Wed­nes­day, Jan. 29. 6ABC Morn­ing An­chor Matt O’Don­nell vis­ited the school to speak to the stu­dents and teach­ers about his ca­reer in the me­dia.

Matt shared his man­tra, PEP, which stands for Pre­par­a­tion, Early and Per­form­ance. He said that his Cath­ol­ic School edu­ca­tion con­trib­uted to his suc­cess in journ­al­ism.
