Driver sought in fatal hit-and-run

A 33-year-old South Philadelphia woman is dead and an unidentified hit-and-run driver remains at large following a fatal rush-hour collision between a truck and a pedestrian in front of a Northeast Philadelphia prison on Dec. 23.

Police say that the accident occurred at about 5:20 p.m. along the 8000 block of State Road near the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility. A black truck was traveling northbound when it struck Theresa M. Pozzi, who was crossing State Road in a westbound direction toward a bus stop. The truck fled northbound, police said.

Paramedics took Pozzi to Aria Health-Torresdale in critical condition. Pozzi was pronounced dead at 6:38 p.m. Pozzi, of the 600 block of Kimball St., had been visiting her boyfriend at the prison, according to relatives who spoke to the Daily News. Witnesses told police that she was attempting to cross midblock where there was no crosswalk, and that she had stopped between lanes of travel waiting for southbound traffic to clear.

Police on Monday repeated a plea for tips that could lead them to the unidentified motorist. They are looking for an older dark pick up or tow truck from the model years 1987 to 1991. Call police at 215–685–3180 to report information. ••
