Calvary AA to celebrate 50th anniversary

When members of the Millbrook Civic Association meet in the Mike Bremser Community Room at the Calvary Athletic Association, they’re surrounded by the sounds of kids.

Sometimes, they’re invaded. The doors to the boys and girls rooms are at the back of the meeting room, so kids racing through are common — and occasionally comic — additions to the association’s sessions.

The adults, after all, are just visiting. The Deerpath Lane building is there for the kids, and the emphasis at Calvary AA is so much on neighborhood youth that it might be hard to imagine that the organization itself is going to be 50 years old.

A big bash is planned to celebrate that golden anniversary on Saturday, May 16, from 8 to midnight at the Philadelphia Ballroom, 2014 Hornig Road, said Bremser and John Kradzinski, association president.

Anyone who has played, coached or volunteered at the AA is invited to the celebration.

Tickets are $40. More information will be published as it becomes available.

Bremser, who is the civic association’s liaison to Philadelphia Mills, said the mall’s exterior renovations are almost complete. Interior renovations are expected to go on from March through November next year. Those improvements will include new lighting, seating and new bathrooms, he said. He added that the mall will be opening 10 to 15 new stores when renovations are complete.

And, this year, for Christmas shoppers’ families, he said, there will be a “very nice Santa set” in the mall’s center court.

Association members are not going to meet in December. The next session will be at 7 p.m. on Jan. 27, 2015. Further, the group’s sessions will be held six times next year — in January, April, June, September, October and November — and always at 7 p.m. on the last Tuesdays of those months in Calvary AA’s Mike Bremser Community Room, 4330 Deerpath Lane. ••
