Times’ journalists win Keystone Press Awards

Two journ­al­ists for the North­east Times won three 2014 Key­stone Press Awards in a statewide con­test sponsored by the Pennsylvania News­Me­dia As­so­ci­ation.

Over­all, me­dia or­gan­iz­a­tions sub­mit­ted entries of work that was pub­lished or pos­ted in 2013. The Times, a com­munity weekly, com­petes in a di­vi­sion for nondaily news­pa­pers with a cir­cu­la­tion more than 10,000.

The awards will be handed out at the Pennsylvania Press Con­fer­ence, which will be held on Sat­urday, May 31, in State Col­lege. The North­east Times staffers honored are:

• Sports ed­it­or Ed Mor­rone won first place in the sports event cov­er­age cat­egory for his story on George Wash­ing­ton High School gradu­ate Shar­rif Floyd, who was chosen in the first round of the NFL Draft by the Min­nesota Vik­ings. The art­icle was pub­lished on May 1, 2013.

• Pho­to­graph­er Maria Pouch­nikova re­ceived second-place hon­ors in the fea­ture photo cat­egory for her pho­to­graphs of MMA cham­pi­on Ed­die Al­varez prin­ted in the Times on Nov. 6, 2013. .

Pouch­nikova also won a second-place award for a photo story pub­lished on April 17, 2013, en­titled, “One Fi­nal Sa­lute,” which cap­tured the fu­ner­al of Fire Capt. Mike Good­win. ••
