ShopRite Partners in Caring Day: The 7th Police District’s community relations officer Richie Simon bags groceries at ShopRite on Sept. 18.

Richie Simon, the 7th Police District’s community relations officer, on Sept. 18 helped bag groceries at the ShopRite at 11000 Roosevelt Blvd. to help raise awareness of hunger and to raise funds to fill shelves at community food banks. Gov. Tom Corbett and the governors of New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Delaware and Maryland had declared Sept. 18 “ShopRite Partners In Caring Day.” City Councilman David Oh and state Reps. Kevin and Brendan Boyle participated at other Northeast Philly ShopRites. ShopRite Partners in Caring has donated $30 million to local food banks that support more than 1,700 charities with food assistance throughout the Northeast United States.

There also was a “best bagger” competition at the Morrell Plaza store and the Boulevard store. Samantha Pawloski of the Boulevard store and Camielle Ausborne of the Morrell Plaza store will now compete at a state level and, if victorious, in Las Vegas for the National Grocers Association finals. The national winner is usually challenged by David Letterman, a one-time grocery store bagger, to compete on the Late Show. In honor of their win, the McMenamin Family ShopRite will make a $100 donation to the Somerton Interfaith Food Bank and Holy Redeemer Home Health.  ••
