Man steps in front of SEPTA train in Somerton

Au­thor­it­ies say that a man who was killed by a SEPTA train in Somer­ton last Thursday in­ten­tion­ally stepped in­to the vehicle’s path.

Phil­adelphia po­lice have not re­leased the name of the 38-year-old vic­tim be­cause of his sus­pec­ted sui­cide. The in­cid­ent oc­curred just be­fore 11:30 a.m. on the 300 block of By­berry Road near the Forest Hills sta­tion.

Wit­nesses saw the man walk­ing along the south­bound track and plat­form as he re­peatedly looked for an on­com­ing train, po­lice said. As the West Trenton Line train ap­proached, the man stepped onto the track. The en­gin­eer re­portedly blew the train’s horn and ap­plied emer­gency brakes, but could not stop in time.

Para­med­ics pro­nounced the man dead at the scene at 11:54 p.m. ••
