Local student awarded scholarship

Head of the class: Amit Ku­mar, a fourth-year med­ic­al stu­dent at Temple Uni­versity School of Medi­cine, is the re­cip­i­ent of the Al­li­ance Med­ic­al Edu­ca­tion Schol­ar­ship.

Amit Ku­mar is the re­cip­i­ent of the Al­li­ance Med­ic­al Edu­ca­tion Schol­ar­ship offered through The Found­a­tion of the Pennsylvania Med­ic­al So­ci­ety.

Ku­mar, son of Ashok and Maria Ku­mar of the North­east, is a fourth-year med­ic­al stu­dent at Temple Uni­versity School of Medi­cine. He cur­rently is do­ing his clin­ic­al ro­ta­tions at St. Luke’s Uni­versity Hos­pit­al in Beth­le­hem, and in­tends to spe­cial­ize in emer­gency medi­cine. He will re­ceive a total of $23,000 in mer­it awards. Ku­mar was also se­lec­ted to win the schol­ar­ship in 2012.

The Pennsylvania Med­ic­al So­ci­ety Al­li­ance, a statewide vo­lun­teer group, is ded­ic­ated to healthy com­munit­ies and the pre­ser­va­tion of the doc­tor-pa­tient re­la­tion­ship. The group has awar­ded its Al­li­ance Med­ic­al Edu­ca­tion Schol­ar­ship for more than a dec­ade to be­ne­fit de­serving med­ic­al stu­dents.

This award is pos­sible thanks to con­tri­bu­tions from Al­li­ance mem­bers and gen­er­al and me­mori­al con­tri­bu­tions. The or­gan­iz­a­tion also holds an an­nu­al fun­draiser. Ku­mar will be presen­ted the award at the event to be held Sat­urday, Oct. 26, at the Her­shey Lodge.

The Found­a­tion, a non­profit af­fil­i­ate of the Pennsylvania Med­ic­al So­ci­ety, provides pro­grams and ser­vices for in­di­vidu­al phys­i­cians and oth­ers that im­prove the well-be­ing of Pennsylvani­ans and sus­tain the fu­ture of medi­cine. It has been help­ing to fin­ance med­ic­al edu­ca­tion for more than 40 years.
