Somerton resident Anne Kalanty recently won a gold medal at the National Senior Games in Cleveland.
Kalanty competed in the Ladies Singles Tennis event and won the championship match in two sets, 6-1 and 6-0.
More than 33,000 senior citizens competed in 38 sports in the Games, which are held in odd-numbered years.
Kalanty and the others qualified by winning a medal in the prior year’s state-level games. She won a gold medal at the Pennsylvania games in Hershey in 2012. The national gold medal she earned was her first. She has a total of five golds, two silvers and one bronze from the state and local levels.
Medalists from next year’s Pennsylvania games in Hershey get invited to the 2015 National Senior Games in Minneapolis-St. Paul.
“I’m looking forward to it,” Kalanty said. “It’s a wonderful way to keep fit, and you meet so many great people through friendly competition.”
Kalanty likes all sports, and celebrated her 80th birthday by winning a first-place trophy and medal in a 5K race. ••
