In late September, the Metropolitan Philadelphia Athletic Association (MPAA) began its inaugural Fall 2013 sports season. The MPAA aims to provide middle school students with opportunities to participate and excel in both competitive and recreational sports. MPAA offers a range of different sports. Nine charter schools from all over Philadelphia will participate, including Memphis Street Academy Charter School in Port Richmond, formerly John Paul Jones School. The MPAA will also offer weekend sports clinics. On Sept. 26, State Rep. John Taylor threw the ceremonial first pass to kick off the flag football game between Memphis Street Academy’s team and Universal Daroff School. The game took place at the Cohocksink Rec. Center.
