Donations needed for community fund

Many Northeast families will be gathering around the dining-room table for a big Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday while others will be eating a turkey meal at a local restaurant.

For others, though, the celebration will be a lot more modest.

And while some are gearing up for Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping, too many won’t be able to buy any Christmas gifts for loved ones or provide a meal for their families.

Thankfully, these folks have been able to count on the kindness of Northeast residents for the last 58 years.

The Times coordinates the Eleanor Smylie Community Fund to match those who could use help at Christmas time with neighbors who have some extra dollars to spare. Already this November, the newspaper has received dozens of requests for help from people.

Among them are a Tacony woman housing her daughter and three grandkids after a marital separation; a longtime Wissinoming resident who is caring for her 4-year-old son and ailing 73-year-old mom; a disabled Frankford woman struggling to feed her kids; a Rhawnhurst man worried about providing food and winter clothes for his 4-month-old child; and a West Mayfair woman who wrote on behalf of a needy neighbor raising two teenage girls.

In addition to these heart-tugging letters, we are getting contributions from readers who are willing and able to help the needy. We gratefully accept each donation, small or large. All of the money goes directly toward gift cards for the less fortunate.

The Times will print the name and donation of each person or group in the paper, or we will honor your request to remain anonymous. If you’d like to donate, or if you’d like to make a request for help, write to Eleanor Smylie Community Fund, 2512 Metropolitan Drive, Trevose, PA 19053. Or, you can email
