Homeowners appeal new assessments

More than 18,000 homeowners are appealing their properties’ new assessments with the Board of Revision of Taxes, an agency that typically sees between 1,000 and 2,000 appeal applications annually.


Millbrook nominates new board members

Millbrook Civic Association members last week nominated incumbent board members to be returned next year.


A day at the park

Play time: City officials on Oct. 30 ceremoniously opened a new playground at Tustin Street and Verree Road. Councilman Brian O’Neill (R-10th dist.) and the Department of Parks & Recreation spent $900,000 on “Champions Park,” which has equipment designed specifically to be accessible for children with special needs. There are three age-specific areas, for kids 2 to 5 years old; 5 to 12 years old; and a centerpiece for kids 2 to 12. Fencing was installed along busy Verree Road for safety. Construction on the site began in the spring and finished about a month ago.


Opera series launched throughout Philadelphia

Opera Philadelphia is launching an annual series that will offer fully staged operas in unexpected venues around the city.


Day of the Dead

A celebration: Swenson High School hosted a Day of the Dead celebration on Nov. 1. On this day, people go to the cemeteries where their family members are buried, sing songs, decorate graves and tell stories. At Swenson, students used face paint to make skulls on their faces.


Frankford Y is free of debt and free to be used again

The Frankford Y at Leiper and Arrott went from community asset to community eyesore in the four-plus years since it closed in mid-2009.


New administrator at Pennypack Park Wesley facility

Wesley Enhanced Living, a nonprofit, faith-based organization that owns and manages multiple continuing-care retirement communities in Bucks, Monroe, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties, announced the appointment of Maria Zeltner as administrator at Wesley Enhanced Living Pennypack Park.


Foundation seeks community grant applications

The Anna T. Jeanes Foundation in support of Jeanes Hospital is accepting applications for its 2013 Community Grants program, designed to fund projects that promote the health, wellness and safety of communities in the hospital’s service area.
