Officials promote US Naval Sea Cadet Corps

Officials from the local chapter of the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps promoted the group at a recent meeting of the Take Back Your Neighborhood civic association.

The USNSCC’s San Antonio Division is located at the Naval Support Activity base at Oxford and Robbins avenues in Lawndale. It is named in honor of the San Antonio, a ship that has served as the base for Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts and anti-piracy forces off Somalia.

The group was chartered by Congress in 1958 to provide American youths with a drug- and alcohol-free environment for hands-on training in various specialties, with the goals of helping them mature and improving their leadership abilities.

Girls and boys age 11-17 are invited to join. They meet the second weekend of the month from 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

The youths take part in drills, trips, parades and special events. They will travel to Norfolk, Va. from May 1-5, boarding ships and taking part in sailor training.

Attending the meeting were Lt. Joan Larkin, the division’s commanding officer, and Jay Meisner, the executive officer.

Larkin said the division has “zero tolerance” for drugs, crime or hazing.
