Faith-healing couple held for trial in son’s death

Herbert and Catherine Schaible will be going to trial on third-degree murder and other charges.

At a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, Municipal Court Judge Charles Hayden held the Schaibles, of Rhawnhurst, on all charges related to the April 18 death of their 7-month-old son Brandon.

The Schaibles are members of First Century Gospel Church, located in Juniata. They believe in prayer, not medical care, for physical healing.

At Wednesday’s hearing, the prosecution presented evidence from a medical examiner, who said Brandon died of dehydration and bacterial pneumonia. Also, police homicide detectives read statements from the Schaibles that included questions about why they did not take their ailing child to a doctor.

“My husband and I decided we wanted to trust God,” Catherine Schaible said. ••
