Pir­ate ma­gic and pup­pet show at lib­rary

The Friends of Holmes­burg Lib­rary will spon­sor a pir­ate ma­gic and pup­pet show on Monday, June 17, at 6:30 p.m. at the lib­rary, at 7810 Frank­ford Ave. Cap’n Abby will of­fer a vari­ety show full of jokes, ma­gic, pup­petry and audi­ence par­ti­cip­a­tion.

Sum­mer meals pro­gram avail­able for chil­dren

The Arch­diocese of Phil­adelphia’s Nu­tri­tion­al De­vel­op­ment Ser­vices will op­er­ate a sum­mer meals pro­gram from June 17 to Aug. 23 so that chil­dren in the five-county area who do not go hungry. This ef­fort fills a gap dur­ing the sum­mer months when meals are not provided in a school set­ting. As a spon­sor of the Seam­less Sum­mer Op­tion Food Ser­vice Pro­gram for Chil­dren, NDS part­ners with com­munity or­gan­iz­a­tions and lead­ers to provide a ser­vice that con­trib­utes to the health and well-be­ing of thou­sands of area chil­dren. 

Par­ti­cip­at­ing sites of­fer chil­dren (18 years of age and un­der) lunch and a choice of break­fast or snack. Meals in­clude whole grains, a vari­ety of salads and fresh ve­get­ables.

Last year, more than  909,000 meals were served in 470 sites in Phil­adelphia and the sur­round­ing counties. Most Phil­adelphia and many sub­urb­an neigh­bor­hoods qual­i­fy. 

The Seam­less Sum­mer Op­tion Food Ser­vice Pro­gram for Chil­dren is a fed­er­ally-fun­ded pro­gram op­er­ated na­tion­ally by the United States De­part­ment of Ag­ri­cul­ture (USDA) and ad­min­istered by the Pennsylvania De­part­ment of Edu­ca­tion.

Por­tuguese Her­it­age Day on June 16

The 20th an­nu­al Phil­adelphia Por­tuguese Her­it­age Fest­iv­al will take place on Sunday, June 16, on the Great Plaza at Penn’s Land­ing. There will be food, beer, wine, art, dance groups, live mu­sic and a flag-rais­ing ce­re­mony. Gates open at 1 p.m. Ad­mis­sion is free. For more in­form­a­tion, call 267-241-7108. ••

Tat­too shops sup­port an­im­al shel­ters

Six tat­too shops will be mak­ing dona­tions to Phil­ad­opt­ables, a group that sup­ports an­im­al shel­ters, for every pur­chase on four up­com­ing days.

The fun­draiser will take place on June 21-22 and 28-29.

Par­ti­cip­at­ing shops in­clude Ka­dillac Tat­too Deuce, at 6722 Rising Sun Ave. in Lawndale. To make an ap­point­ment, call 215-342-4062.
