Fatal shootings dampen New Year

A pair of fatal shoot­ings marred the end of 2012 and the on­set of the New Year in Frank­ford.

Au­thor­it­ies have yet to identi­fy a man found dead in a va­cant res­id­en­tial lot on the 5400 block of Ak­ron St. on Dec. 29. A neigh­bor called 911 at about 8:30 a.m. after find­ing the vic­tim ly­ing in the rear drive­way of a lot between row homes, po­lice said. The man was wrapped in a brown com­fort­er and had gun­shot wounds of the lower back and right el­bow. Para­med­ics pro­nounced him dead at the scene.

Po­lice have not re­leased de­tails about the shoot­ing, pos­sible sus­pects or a motive.

Hom­icide de­tect­ives be­lieve an ar­gu­ment sparked fatal gun­fire at about 2:30 a.m. Jan. 1 on the 1600 block of Pratt St. Of­ficers went to the scene in re­sponse to a re­port of a gun­fight in the street. They found Tyjuan Shields, 24, with a single gun­shot wound of the head. Para­med­ics pro­nounced him dead at the scene at 2:45 a.m.
