Lawncrest Civic meets new community relations officer

Mark Mroz, the outgoing 2nd Police District community relations officer, introduced his replacement at last week’s meeting of the Lawncrest Community Association.

Dianne Murphy started on Monday as the new community relations officer.

Mroz will remain in the same building at Harbison Avenue and Levick Street, walking up a flight of stairs to work as an aide to Inspector Mike Cochrane, the new commander of the Northeast Police Division.

Mroz had been on the job since December 2006, when he replaced Kevin Corr, who retired.

In other news from the Jan. 15 meeting:

• The Lawncrest Branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia, at 6098 Rising Sun Ave., will host Save the Orangutans on Saturday, Feb. 16, from 2 to 2:45 p.m.

Teenagers from the Philadelphia Zoo Champions for Restoring Endangered Wildlife and a zoo animal ambassador will be in attendance.

The Zoo CREW will discuss ways to save Sumatran orangutans, apes who live in trees in Indonesia.

• The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program will offer free income tax preparation and filing from Jan. 26 through April 15 at 7315 Castor Ave. Hours are weekdays from 2 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The service is generally available to people with an annual income of $39,000 and below.

• Lawncrest Community Association will meet again on Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m., at St. William parish hall, at Argyle and Robbins streets. ••
