Fatal crashes claim two

Two people died on area expressways last weekend in a pair of unrelated crashes.

The first occurred on Friday at about 11:50 p.m. when a tractor-trailer struck a Northeast man as he walked along the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 near the Allegheny Avenue interchange, Pennsylvania State Police said.

Authorities identified the victim as Gerald Martin, 65, of an undisclosed block of Leonard Street. He died at the scene. State police did not say why he was on foot on the limited-access highway.

The striking vehicle was a 2006 Peterbuilt registered to Ward Bennett III, 46, of Lumberton, N.J. The truck did not stop at the scene. Witnesses helped authorities identify it. State police announced the identification and confiscation of the truck shortly before noon Sunday. No criminal charges had been filed on Tuesday.

At about 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, a one-car crash on Woodhaven Road, near the Knights Road exit, claimed the life of a woman. The victim was behind the wheel of a 2005 Hyundai Tucson traveling eastbound when she lost control of the vehicle, which struck a guardrail and rolled down an embankment, Philadelphia police said.

She died at Aria Health-Torresdale shortly before 5 a.m. Authorities did not disclose her identity. ••
