The NoLibs Holiday Shopping Spree, a Philadelphia Magazine 2012 “Best of Philly” nominated shopping event, will take place this Saturday, Dec. 7, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 8, from 11 a.m. to 6p.m. at participating stores in Northern Liberties.

Entering its seventh year, the NoLibs Holiday Shopping Spree has grown from three stores to include a line-up of thirteen local businesses.  The owners of Art Star Gallery and Boutique, Arcadia Boutique, and Conspiracy Showroom, the latter of the three has since closed, came together to devise a plan to attract more business.

“We started seven years ago because we all had a similar audience, but were not competition for each other.  We wanted to get people excited to shop in the neighborhood because things were still slow in this area,” explains Megan Brewster, co-owner of Art Star.

“We came together and had this brainstorming session and came up with the progressive shopping idea and it’s grown ever since as more businesses came into the neighborhood,” adds Erin Waxman, co-owner of Art Star.

So, what does progressive mean in reference to the shopping event?  While the event can be considered progressive in that it gets people holiday shopping at local retailers rather than chain stores at malls, shoppers get progressively higher discounts the more stores they shop in during the event.

All participating stores will give 10% off during the event, but the discounts progress from there.  After your first purchase, you’ll receive one sticker.  That sticker now entitles you to 15% off your next purchase.  Two stickers will get you 20% off your next purchase and the event maxes out at three stickers, which will get you 25% off any purchase at any of the participating stores.

Feel free to start your shopping plan of attack early.

“People get excited about it.  They come out the week before and scope out the stores and plan how to get the best deals on the items they want.  It’s become a game for people,” shares Waxman.

All participating businesses are located within the perimeters of 2nd and 4th streets, with the exception of JINXED, and with such an eclectic grouping, you’re sure to find something for everyone on your list.

City Planter, the first location on the shopping spree’s map, is sure to be a hit with your green-thumbed friends, offering decorative planters and fresh holiday cuttings.  Looking to outfit some fanatic Philadelphia fans?  Philly Phaithful is the spot, with originally designed Philadelphia sports apparel — and a showroom screening live sports and offering free beer during the event for those looking to take a break from the holiday shopping madness.

Art Star is sure to put you in the holiday spirit with Christmas ornaments by local artists and mini hot chocolates to drink.

Framing Philadelphia will satisfy those with old-world taste, specializing in antiques and maps, and offering custom framing for that special moment you captured and want to preserve.

Looking to be more “green” in your gift giving?  Check out Arcadia Boutique, co-founder of the event, where you can find the latest eco-fashion clothing by worldly sustainable designers for women, along with a small selection for the men on your gift list.

Bloom Boutique will feature women’s’ apparel, hand-made jewelry, and an assortment of seasonal items.  Don’t have time to wrap those presents? Bloom will wrap them for you, free of charge and give you a free gift when you purchase $50 worth of merchandise.
