Police paying close attention to neigborhood nuisances

Authorities are cracking down on a few properties that have become neighborhood nuisances, said Pete Specos, the Frankford Civic Association’s president.


Rally for schools Dec. 12

There will be an anti-school spending cuts rally at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, at Bustleton and Cottman avenues.


Recycle old appliances

PECO customers have recycled more than 35,000 energy-guzzling refrigerators and freezers through PECO Smart Appliance Recycling, helping the state of Pennsylvania reach a total of 200,000 recycled appliances during the last five years, the utility announced recently

Residents should ignore letters from BRT that were sent out in error

The Board of Revision of Taxes has sent out a couple of thousand letters to property owners who are appealing their new assessments, advising them their 2014 taxes will actually be lower than they are this year. Given that fact, the BRT asks the letter’s recipients if they would consider withdrawing their assessment appeals.

Robbery suspect ID’ed after being shot by police

Police have identified a robbery suspect who was shot by officers after he allegedly pulled a sawed-off shotgun on them Nov. 30.


The Santa Diet

When he visits your house on Christmas Eve, don’t disappoint that man in the red suit and white beard. A batch or two of homemade cookies is a sure way to share the jollies of the jingle-bell season. After all, a journey of about 3,400 miles, as the reindeer fly, is worthy of a special treat. Everyone loves Christmas cookies, especially the original, jolly, Jelly Belly. But he does get some cookie consumption competition at my house around holiday time.
