Residents should ignore letters from BRT that were sent out in error

The Board of Revision of Taxes has sent out a couple of thousand letters to property owners who are appealing their new assessments, advising them their 2014 taxes will actually be lower than they are this year. Given that fact, the BRT asks the letter’s recipients if they would consider withdrawing their assessment appeals.


Did your home’s value triple? City has a tax break for you

Longtime residents who this year saw their homes’ assessments more than triple are being invited to participate in a program that could cut their 2014 taxes by hundreds of dollars. Last week, the city began mailing information about the Longtime Owner Occupants Program, or LOOP, to about 80,000 homeowners, said Mark McDonald, Mayor Michael Nutter’s spokesman. If they’re eligible, homeowners could see tax savings from a few dollars to thousands of dollars, McDonald said. Those tax decreases should average out at about $700, he added.

S. Philly man shot, dumped in Rhawnhurst

A South Philly man was shot late Sunday in Southwest Philadelphia and driven to Rhawnhurst, where he was dumped and shot again.


Police believe attack planned

Philadelphia police said on Tuesday that they don’t believe a recent home invasion in the area of Willits and Ashton roads was a random act of violence, although detectives are still trying to identify the masked gunman who made off with a victim’s Rolex wristwatch.
