EKNA zon­ing meet­ing

To­night, Oct. 10, at 7:15 p.m., the East Kens­ing­ton Neigh­bors As­so­ci­ation will hold a zon­ing meet­ing open to the pub­lic at Circle of Hope Church at 2007 Frank­ford Ave.

Three cases will be heard; 2119 E Cum­ber­land St., an ad­di­tion to an ex­ist­ing build­ing to cre­ate a three unit, six bed­room build­ing with no open area; 2015 Martha St., a single fam­ily dwell­ing seek­ing a vari­ance for an open area, and 1917-1919 and 1921-1945 E. Hagert St., a pro­pos­al for 40 units of seni­or hous­ing. ••

Brides­burg His­tor­ic­al So­ci­ety to meet

The next meet­ing of the Brides­burg His­tor­ic­al So­ci­ety will be to­night, Oc­to­ber 10, at 7:30p.m., at  All Saints Mari­an Hall, on the north­w­est corner of  Ed­ge­mont and Bucki­us streets.

Troop 120 toy drive

Al­ex­an­der Korn, a Life Scout of Boy Scout Troop 120, is or­gan­iz­ing a toy drive for his Eagle Scout pro­ject.

The toys will be col­lec­ted, wrapped and de­livered at Christ­mas to home­less chil­dren in the trans­ition­al hous­ing com­plex Vis­it­a­tion Homes, at 2638 Kens­ing­ton Ave.

Chil­dren’s ages are from 1 to 10. Any­one wish­ing to con­trib­ute toys can drop them off at 4536 Al­mond St., or call 215-289-2456 to ar­range for pickup. Col­lec­tion will run through Dec. 10. ••

John J. Taylor’s Seni­or Expo

State Rep. John Taylor’s Seni­or Expo will be held Fri­day, Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Co­hox Re­cre­ation Cen­ter, Ce­dar and Cam­bria streets.

Taylor has been host­ing this event for 27 years; this year over 700 area seni­ors are ex­pec­ted to at­tend.

Ex­pect to see rep­res­ent­at­ives from the Phil­adelphia Po­lice De­part­ment, PECO, in­sur­ance com­pan­ies, med­ic­al com­pan­ies, vet­er­an agen­cies and many oth­ers. Blood pres­sure and cho­les­ter­ol tests will also be avail­able, plus free mas­sages.

Trans­port­a­tion pickups will be avail­able throughout the dis­trict; pickups will be at St. Anne’s Seni­or Cen­ter, Ju­ni­ata Older Adults Cen­ter, Brides­burg Rec. Cen­ter and Our Ladies of Port Rich­mond be­gin­ning at 9:30 a.m.

Out­door pray­er ser­vice

On Fri­day, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m., there will be a Ros­ary for Amer­ica out­door pray­er ser­vice at Our Lady of Knock Shrine, Holy Name of Je­sus Rect­ory, Berks and Gaul streets.

Fall River Ward cleanup

Join the River Ward com­munity groups FNA, EKNA, ORCA, NK­CDC and PRO­PAC for the an­nu­al fall cleanup on Oct. 13.

Join the groups at 9 a.m. at one of the fol­low­ing loc­a­tions: Fishtown Rec Cen­ter, 1202 E. Mont­gomery; East Kens­ing­ton, York and Cor­al streets; Olde Rich­mond, Hunt­ing­don and Ara­mingo Av­en­ue; Port Rich­mond, Rich­mond and Tioga (meet­ing at 9:30 a.m.); NK­CDC Garden Cen­ter, Frank­ford and Berks.

Please bring gloves if you have them. All par­ti­cipants are in­vited to join us at Phil­adelphia Brew­ing Com­pany for a BBQ after the cleanup (ve­get­ari­an op­tions provided).

Port Rich­mond breast can­cer fun­draiser

On Sunday, Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Ladies of Port Rich­mond will host a break­fast buf­fet to raise funds for breast can­cer re­search.

Out­door movie at Penn Treaty Park

On Thursday, Oct. 19, join neigh­bors and friends un­der the stars. The show will start at 6:30 p.m. and will be a fun night for the fam­ily. Bring your own blanket or chairs and pop­corn. Movie will be an­nounced that night. ••

Frank Glav­in flea mar­ket

A flea mar­ket will be held  at  Frank Glav­in Play­ground, 2600 West­mo­re­land St., on Sat­urday, Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $10 per space for vendors.

Fall sports at Shissler Rec

Ap­plic­a­tions are now be­ing ac­cep­ted for fall sports at Shissler Rec., in­clud­ing bas­ket­ball for boys and girls ages 10 to 13 and men’s in­door soc­cer. Cost is $300 per team. Money is due by Nov. 9.

Fishtown Spelling Bee

The 11th an­nu­al Fishtown Spelling Bee will be presen­ted by Fishtown Ac­tion and the Penn Treaty Spe­cial Ser­vices Dis­trict.

The bee will take place on Oct. 26 at 3:30 p.m. at Shissler Rec. Cen­ter, 1800-56 Blair St. The com­pet­i­tion will be­gin at 4 p.m. It is open to all stu­dents, re­gard­less of school.

Com­pet­i­tion will be co-ed and broken in­to the fol­low­ing age levels: grades 2 to 4, grades 5 to 6 and grades 7 to 8. Prizes will be awar­ded to the top three spellers in each age group.

The win­ners will get a pizza party for their classrooms. To pre­pare, the or­gan­izers sug­gest both in-school com­pet­i­tions and study­ing pages such as www.spelling-words-well.com. ••

Pol­ish cul­tur­al fun­draiser

Ap­ple­bee’s, at 2535 Castor Ave., will host a fun­draiser pan­cake break­fast to sup­port the Pol­ish Amer­ic­an Cul­tur­al Cen­ter on Oct. 27, from 8 to 10 a.m. Cost is $5 per per­son.

The event will fea­ture din­ner and an on­co­logy pan­el dis­cus­sion with ex­perts from Naz­areth Hos­pit­al and the Amer­ic­an Can­cer So­ci­ety. Ad­mis­sion is $5.
